Environmental Impact
It is often the case that the environment suffers when production takes place. However, Yokohama has since turned the table around in order to minimize our environmental footprint. Initially, the raw materials used in our tire production negatively impacted the environment, but not anymore. We achieved this by stopping the use of CFCs and trichloroethane and then switching from heavy oil to natural gas. This reduces the emission of toxins like C02 and saves energy.
We also went even further in creating a safe environment and combating global warming. In 2007 Yokohama proposed to plant 500,000 trees across Yokohama plants worldwide. The sole purpose is for the trees, when matured, to absorb the C02 emitted during production.
As of now, we have planted more than 180,000 trees worldwide, including at our headquarters in California, the VA plant in Salem, and other locations that include Japan, Thailand, China, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Going by analysis, each tree will be able to absorb about 20-25 pounds of C02. All these together have effectively reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 8%.
Aside from ensuring an eco-friendly environment, Yokohama has also been a source of livelihood for many. At the current time, Yokohama's rubber division has about 13,500 employees worldwide. This division has also ensured that products like rubber and adhesives get to people. This includes people in the automobile field, marine, construction, and civil engineering, as well as aerospace and sporting goods.
We just don't produce tires; the environment's well-being is paramount to us. We delight in seeing people actively employed, with the right resources to do their jobs. This is our way of ensuring we have a positive environmental impact.
